Sigiriya, Sri Lanka

Probably the most recognizable feature in Sri Lanka is the spectacular rock fortress of Sigiriya.  Originally built in 477 A.D. as an impregnable fortress and palace, Sigiriya was later used as a monastic refuge in the 16th and 17th centuries.  The rock dramitically rises 200 meters above the surrounding plains and it is a wonder to imagine how they managed to carry up the materials necessary for its construction.  At the base lies the remains of the royal rock and water gardens in what once was the lush pleasure gardens of the royalty.  Approximately half way up the rock under an overhang are the exquisite Sigiriya Frescoes.  These 5th century erotica paintings once again point to the use of this rock as more of a pleasure ground for the elite than just a fortress.  Due to their position under a rocky overhang, the frescoes have been protected from the weather and therefore remain in remarkably good condition.  Further along the ascent of the rock is the Graffiti Mirror Wall.  Once a highly polished surface, the wall is covered with graffiti dating back to the 6th century and unfortunatley also covered with more modern writings as well.  The final ascent to the summit of Sigiriya takes you through two enormous 5th century lion's paws and until recently, the path continued through the lion's mouth.  After a one hour climb, you reach the pinnacle of the rock and are rewarded with spectacular views over central Sri Lanka.  All that remains today are the foundations of the fortress cum palace and a small tank that resembles a modern day swimming pool.  Sitting atop Sigiriya contemplating the views and history, it is easy to see why Sigiriya is Sri Lanka's premier attraction.
