| The Hill Country, Sri Lanka - Part II A spectacular four hour train ride from Nuwara Eliya brings you to the sleepy village of Ella. Ella has one of the most stunning views in Sri Lanka, strait through Ella Gap, a valley between the hills that opens up to the southern plains of Sri Lanka. We were fortunate enough to stay at the Ambiente, a small guesthouse nestled in a tea plantation atop a steep and winding road. Every morning, we would dramatically open up our french doors to reveal the breathtaking view through Ella Gap and consider ourselves extremely lucky people. Ella is a perfect place for walking and one of our outings took us to Little Adam's Peak, a hill overlooking the valley of Ella Gap. We were accompanied by a four-legged guide from Ambiente, Tina the dog. Over the years, Tina has followed so many people from Ambiente to Little Adam's Peak that she now knows exactly where you want to go. She was indispensable and happily led us strait to the top. She even stopped occasionally, we think, to tell us that here was a good spot for a photograph which every self-respecting guide points out. The only disappointing aspect about Ella was having to leave after a short three day stay. The next time we visit Sri Lanka, Ella will certainly be a destination to return to again. |
