| Kodaikanal, India From the green tea plantations of Munnar at 1,600 meters, we took a bus into the flat plains of India and then ascended into the lush forests of the Western Ghats in Tamil Nadu to Kodaikanal, located at a height of 2,100 meters. The bus ride was long, bumpy, cramped and absolutely gorgeous. The area around Kodaikanal (known as Kodai) is heavily wooded, hilly and dotted with majestic waterfalls. Around every hairpin turn, and there were enough to make the strongest stomach a bit weak, we were presented with another grand vista of the Kodai Forest. | Historically, Kodai is the only hill station in India set up by Americans. Kodaikanal Internationl School was established in 1901 and, to this day, remains one of the most prestigious schools in the country. It is housed in a series of beautiful stone buildings that are worth a visit as you stroll around Kodai. Adding to the international feel of Kodai is the large community of Tibetans living in the area. There are a number of Tibetan craft stores and restaurants making it easy to find a heavy sweater for those chilly evenings and a good momo (Tibetan dumpling) at any time of the day. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
